Description

up at First Colony

Inquiring minds have been asking about the activity around First Colony Mall in Sugar Land, and I have answers. Sectioned off parking lots and loads of dirt are thanks to an expansion project that will bring four new, nationally known restaurants to the area. When the project is finished, First Colony Mall will have a restaurant plaza, complete with a bayou running through it. The Cheesecake Factory, the first restaurant on the project list, should be open in early 2005.

There's nothing like spending Saturday at a museum, strolling slowly and taking in the bright colors, inspired shapes and unique creations. Then you leave the gift shop and enter the exhibit areas.

What? You mean everyone doesn't stop at the shop first?

A recent excursion to five of Houston's museums gave me some great holiday gift ideas. Adding to my happiness were accessible staff and well stocked shops, despite it being a busy day. And as a member of multiple museums, I can attest to the money saving power of a membership card. It will knock 10 percent off items. Museums also offer shopping incentives to members throughout the year.

Free and funky

I started at the 's aluminum clad building. There's no admission cost, but it never hurts to drop a little something in the donation imitation pendant cartier love box before heading downstairs to the gift shop, which imitation love cartier pendant is jam packed with items not likely to be found at your local mall.

A handful of things caught my eye, including totally Mod dog bowls ($14.95 $18.95) and a pocket paint set ($9.95) that holds 12 watercolors and other supplies.

A friend used to accessorize only with items from the CAM, and now I can see why. More expensive handmade items sit alongside less expensive bracelets, rings and necklaces.

The awe inspiring Cartier exhibit is at the , Houston, but alas, nothing is for sale. That's not to say there isn't plenty of amazing jewelry to ooh and aah over in the museum's two shops. Local designer has created a wealth of pieces, from funky cross necklaces to colorful and chunky bracelets. The prices vary, but pieces seem to be in just about every price range.

Whimsical barware, including a martini glass covered in shoes and purses ($24), would complement any bar. Books, stationery, posters and prints of many popular artworks also are available.

If you'd like something original, stop by the 's annual holiday sale, where you can find artworks from paintings, drawings and photographs to ceramics, jewelry and wearable art created by students and area artists. Sunday.

Museum of Fine Arts, Houston

Location: The Caroline Wiess Law Building, 1001 Bissonnet; the Building, 5601 Main.

The popular was packed the day I went, but the Collectors Shop was a center of calm. The first thing you notice is the stunning display of framed butterflies. The prices vary by size and number of butterflies encased in the ornate frames. Other items that made my to recommend list were a Grow Your Own Bonsai Tree kit ($9.95), sequined evening bags in multiple shapes and colors ($19.99 $42) and some funky jewelry made from brightly colored rubber adorned with everything from flowers to cameo pieces ($6.95 and up).

From floor to ceiling, the Children's Museum of Houston Gift Shop utilizes every inch of space, offering toys for all ages and developmental stages. Naturally I was pulled toward some adorable rings that look like princess crowns, but necklace cartier love replica I soon moved on to sturdy wooden castles, dollhouses, puzzles and stuffed animals.

Don't let the Houston Center for ContemporaryCraft's heavy wooden doors intimidate you. Instead, open them to find jewelry, pottery and other items sure to please that picky person on your list. You'll find everything from fun, giggly items to serious investment pieces. I have no doubt that artist replica cartier gold chain had something important to say with her mix of Barbie body parts and metal, but I enjoyed her jewelry from $90 earrings to a $1,200 Barbie hand bracelet for its workmanship and kitsch value. There are eclectic and imaginative pieces of pottery and sculpture throughout the gallery.
